Vetscan OptiCell 2025 Animal Health Award Winner - Zoetis

Zoetis is proud to share that Vetscan OptiCell™ has been named a Best New Companion Animal Product winner of the 2025 S&P Global Animal Health Awards, recognizing innovations that are advancing veterinary medicine and supporting the evolving needs of today’s practices.

Vetscan OptiCell is the world’s first cartridge-based, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered hematology analyzer. Designed to transform in-clinic hematology, the system provides complete blood count (CBC) analysis in minutes, enabling veterinary teams to make fast, confident clinical decisions.

A Breakthrough in In-Clinic Hematology

Vetscan OptiCell combines proprietary microfluidics with advanced AI to deliver reference laboratory-quality results directly at the point of care—helping clinics save time, cost, and space, while enhancing the in-clinic diagnostics experience.

Viscoelastic focusing (VEF) technology aligns cells in a single layer for sharp focus imaging. It allows accurate platelet recognition, identifying visible platelets within a clump– a challenge encountered by traditional hematology analyzers. Combining expertly trained AI algorithms with VEF technology, Vetscan OptiCell counts hundreds of thousands of cells during every sample run and analyzes them against hundreds of unique parameters for precise cellular classification in minutes.1 Study results have shown Vetscan OptiCell delivers precise results for key parameters, including platelet count, white blood cells, red blood cells and reticulocytes across quality control and clinical samples.1 This integration of microfluidics and AI is unique in veterinary diagnostics, offering reference-lab quality results directly in the clinic.

Connected expertise through the Zoetis Virtual Laboratory

Vetscan OptiCell’s single-use cartridge-based system broadens access to advanced hematology while helping to improve clinic workflow. To support clinical teams beyond the instrument, Vetscan OptiCell connects clinicians with a network of expert clinical pathologists through the ZoetisDx portal within the Zoetis Virtual Laboratory.

Looking to the Future of Diagnostics

Vetscan OptiCell represents the next generation of veterinary diagnostics uniting proprietary microfluidics with advanced AI to deliver rapid, reliable hematology results directly in the clinic. Early feedback from clinicians across Europe and North America has highlighted its accuracy, efficiency, and impact on patient care, as well as its role in reshaping workflows and elevating standards in veterinary medicine. Looking beyond 2025, Vetscan OptiCell is expected to make a lasting contribution to the profession by enabling veterinarians to spend more valuable time supporting patients and meeting the rising expectations of modern pet owners.
