About Our Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Mike McFarland serves as the “face and voice” to Zoetis’ customers – veterinary professionals, livestock farmers and pet owners worldwide. Following 15 years of clinical practice, including 5 years as the Medical Director for one of the country's first after-hours emergency practices in Dallas, Texas, Dr. McFarland joined Pfizer Animal Health (became Zoetis in 2013) as a member of the technical service team for the U.S. companion animal business.

Over the next years, he established our U.S. Veterinary Specialty Team with an initial emphasis on educating practitioners on pain management. He later served as the Group Director for U.S. Veterinary Medical Services, a role that also included Senior Medical Advisor on the U.S. Operations Leadership Team, Chair of the U.S. Veterinary Leadership Team, and responsibility for Veterinary Medical Information & Product Support (Drug Safety) as well as U.S. Academic and Professional Affairs. His influence helped established the multi-million-dollar Pfizer Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship Award.

In addition to his current role as Global Chief Medical Officer, Mike serves on the board of directors for American Humane. He is proud to be one of the Founders, and President of the board of trustees, for the Human Animal Bond Research Institute. He has been recognized as an Outstanding Alumnus of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University (2012) and received the National Humanitarian Medal from American Humane (2016).

Mike earned his undergraduate degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M University and DVM from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M. Dr. McFarland is board certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.
