This spotlight on our colleagues looks at a special group of contributors to Zoetis: interns. Students join our company for temporary assignments, often during the summer, and they learn about the work we do to improve animal health. Read three stories of interns who are making a difference at Zoetis and seeing the Zoetis Core Beliefs in action.
Eliana in VMRD
Eliana is a veterinary student interning at VMRD headquarters in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is working with the Pharmacovigilance team to summarize data for adverse advents and write post-market safety and efficacy assessments of products for internal use at Zoetis. Eliana is entering her third year of veterinary school at Michigan State University, and when she graduates, she would like to go into private practice caring for large animals.
Because of her internship, Eliana has had the opportunity to learn about other areas of the company, including Zoetis’ regulatory work, which has piqued her career interests. Working with the Regulatory team gave her a deeper understanding about the scientific partnership between the animal health industry and federal agencies. She said she witnessed Zoetis colleagues finding ways to live the Core Belief of Always Do the Right Thing from her first day on the job.
“Meeting the people who work here showed me what the company is about. Everyone is passionate about animal health, and I saw firsthand decisions being made in the best interests of animal welfare,” said Eliana. “The scientists and researchers get so fired up about their innovative work, which makes me believe in the mission of Zoetis.”
Eliana’s mentor this summer is Steve, Manager, VMRD Global Regulatory Affairs. He said, “Eliana has a wonderfully curious mind, a skill for engaging people, and an ability to ask thought-provoking questions. Plus, she is a Zoetis Scholarship recipient and a student representative to the American Veterinary Medical Association. It’s been a joy to have Eliana as a member of the US Pharmacovigilance team this summer.”
Caroline in Operations
Caroline is a Werkstudent, a German role similar to an intern, with the Operations department in Zoetis’ Berlin office. Caroline works 15 hours per week while she is studying full-time in pursuit of a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Business Management at the Technical University in Berlin.
Caroline found her position via an online posting. She had interviewed with other companies, but chose Zoetis because of its culture. She saw the Zoetis Core Belief that Our Colleagues Make the Difference. Two things stood out: she would be an equal member of the team and she would have the opportunity to work on real, meaningful projects. Her biggest contribution has been to help Zoetis publish new price lists to all its customers. Now that project is complete, she continues to work on data management projects and learn new skills in different departments.
“Zoetis has a great working environment. I get insights to all different parts of the company such as customer service, finance, and logistics,” said Caroline. “I felt welcomed from the very beginning, and I can go to anyone for help or information.”
Caroline’s advisor is Thomas, Senior CRM Manager. Thomas said, “Caroline was responsible for all customer communications and validity checks on one of our team’s major projects. She displayed an ability to learn rapidly and adapt quickly to change, while producing high quality work. She sets a perfect example for our Core Belief that Our Colleagues Make the Difference.”
Mallory in Sales
Mallory began as an intern in the Human Resources department at Zoetis headquarters in New Jersey in June 2016. At the time, she was pursuing her master’s degree in a combined business and science program at Rutgers University. During her last year of graduate school, she transitioned to a part-time position in HR while finishing her studies. After graduation, in July 2017, Mallory became a full-time Zoetis colleague as an Associate Territory Business Manager in Sales.
As an intern, Mallory built a set of business skills that she says she will carry throughout her career. One of the biggest responsibilities she had was managing the HR phone line as part of the Zoetis Colleague Services team, where colleagues call for help with HR issues. Mallory also saw the Zoetis Core Belief of One Zoetis in action as HR partnered with the business to execute company strategies.
Mallory always knew she wanted to work in pharmaceuticals and animal health, so Zoetis is a perfect fit for her. While an intern, she networked with colleagues throughout the company to learn about different roles at Zoetis. She was impressed by the passion and integrity of the sales organization and is excited to begin her career there. Mallory’s new role is based in Albany, New York, and she will sell Zoetis products to companion animal veterinarian practices throughout the Northeast.
“I love that Zoetis wants to promote their talent pipeline. They are invested in the best interests of their employees,” said Mallory.
When Mallory worked in HR, she was supervised by Evelyn, HR Business Partner, Global Finance, Global ITS & Chief Talent Officer, Human Resources & Communications. Evelyn said, “Mallory is a great asset to Zoetis. She takes initiative and demonstrates agility and flexibility, all while living our Core Beliefs. I have no doubt she will have a successful career with Zoetis.”
